Welcome to the Sumter County Public School District

Dr. Marcy Burroughs was appointed superintendent of schools for the Sumter County School District on June 27, 2023. Before this appointment, Dr. Burroughs served as an Education Administrator in the Office of School Improvement for the Alabama State Department of Education for the last three years, supporting districts and schools in Central, West, and South Alabama, where she supervised Education Specialists and Principal Coaches.

 

For the prior four years, Dr. Burroughs was a Curriculum and Instruction Director and supervised School Improvement and Instructional Technology Specialists in Bessemer City School District. Dr. Burroughs served as an assistant principal at Brookwood High School in Tuscaloosa County from 2011-2016. She also served as the assistant principal at Southside High School in Dallas County from 2010-2011 and worked as an adjunct Math Instructor at Shelton State and Lawson State Community Colleges from 2000-2010.

 

Dr. Burroughs earned her Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Stillman College. She earned her Master of Arts in Secondary Education from the University of Alabama. Dr. Burroughs pursued a Master’s and Education Specialist degree from the University of West Alabama and completed her doctoral degree from Samford University. She is a native of Hale County and graduated from Greensboro East High School in 1993. Dr. Burroughs began her teaching career as a mathematics teacher in Tuscaloosa County Schools from 1998-2010. She left the district in 2010 for a Dallas County Public Schools career.

 

Dr. Burroughs loves gardening, movies, and spending time with her family and friends outside of work. She is a Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. member and serves on various community organizations.
